An Attractive Choice for Busy Professional

Many professionals choose apartment living over home ownership. The flexibility that renting provides is a perfect solution for professionals in dynamic careers.Access to transit services is close by or you can find properties right downtown! HarithHomes gives a chance to make your apartment professional.

Apartment living is clearly a great choice, but how do you turn those eggshell-white walls into a comfortable home to match your professional lifestyle? It’s not as hard as you might think!

Add Colour!

The walls are the background of your home and set the tone for each room. White walls in apartments can make an Flats and apartments seem cold and institutional. Make yourself feel truly at home by dressing up the walls.

If you paint, select a light or neutral colour. Many lease or rental agreements require that you return the walls to their original colour when you move-out. Lighter colours are much easier to paint over than dark, bold colours and they can make small rooms look larger.

If you don’t want to paint, you can still dress up your walls with wall hangings, fabric, removable wallpaper boarders and stickers, stencils or artwork.

Create a Theme

A staple of a student apartment is mix-and-match furniture. Professionals often hang onto these not-so-treasured heirlooms far longer than necessary. Pull the room together by getting rid of those worn-out hand-me-downs and invest in furniture that compliments your style and taste. Accent your room with decorations and colours that create unity.

Focus on Functionality
Apartment living is all about functionality. Create a useful space that is also stylish by dressing up your storage space. Unique wall-shelves make a statement and make use of vertical space. Doors on cabinets and shelves create a clean and organized look by keeping otherwise cluttered looking items out of sight.

Less is more

Clutter shrinks rooms. When decorating a small space, chose a few key pieces and keep the knickknacks to a minimum. Create the illusion of more space by choosing furniture and accessories that have clean light lines and let light pass through the room.

Use doors and dividers that are made from glass or mirrors. Find furniture that has exposed legs and light materials. Hanging lights, shelves and plants can increase vertical space and keep the floor from feeling heavy.

Your kid’s Bedroom into an Inspiring Homework Space

If you have a child, you know that his or her bedroom can be many things. It can be a restful place for sleep, an imaginative play land for toys, and even a place that he or she is sent for discipline when in trouble.
However, one of the most important – yet challenging – environments to create within a child’s room is an inspiring homework space.

It can be tough to get your child to focus on work once they are home after a long day at school, but one thing that can help is having a place specifically designated for work that makes it feel both important and fun.

Want to know more about how to create a space within a bedroom that is great to do homework and study in? Check out our 5 helpful tips below. They can help you turn your child’s bedroom into a multi-purpose space where fun meets function.

1. Designate a Wall or Corner

One of the most important ways you can help your child stay focused on his homework in his bedroom is by designating a specific wall or corner of the room as a workspace. Put a desk in the space, as well as any other bookshelves, bulletin boards, or supplies he or she might need.

Don’t forget to make it clear that this new space is specifically for homework. By creating an area that is only meant for work and nothing else, your child will be able to focus on the task at hand when it is time to sit down and do work.

2. Decorate Together

To create an inspiring workspace, you should decorate with things that are both related to schoolwork and fun. Consider using pictures of your child’s favorite book characters, colorful numbers charts, and encouraging posters.

Instead of just decorating the space yourself, have your little one help you create the space! Together you can create a star chart to keep track of the goals your child reaches, or make a picture collage of your child and his or her sports teams, school activities, or friends.

You can also research the subjects your child will be learning throughout the year, then post informative and interesting pictures about the lessons. Allowing your child to have some input in what goes on the wall will give thema sense of ownership of their workspace and will take the space more seriously.

HarithaHomes Luxury flats and apartments bring your dream home with the touch of green scenenery, where you can decorate your home for your kid’s like they feel privilege with surroundings.

3. Stock it

When creating an inspiring workspace for your child, make sure you stock it thoroughly! Get colorful pens, pencils, papers, scissors, crayons, markers, calculators, glue, tape, notebooks, and more. Make sure that if your child ever needs a specific supply, he or she will be able to find it right at their desk. This will ensure that the workspace feels like a resource of opportunities, rather than a limitation of options.

4. Get Rid of Distractions

In addition to designating a specific part of a child’s bedroom for work, it’s also important to try to keep the bedroom as much about work and sleep as possible. Keep books and supplies in the room, but try to limit the number of “fun” distractions available, such as games, toys, televisions, and video games.

Reserve a space in the rental (in a play room, den, living room, etc.) that is just meant for playing, and store all common distractions there. This will ensure that when you have left your child to get work done in the bedroom, they won’t get distracted by toys or other activities.

5. Consider a Shared Homework Space

If you have more than one child, consider putting their homework spaces in one spot. Many children learn better when they are around other kids who are learning and doing work, so having a shared homework area can help both children get work done more efficiently.

Energy Saving Tips For Your Apartment

With energy costs high and no relief in sight, we figured it was time to make a list of some of the small things you can do to cut down on energy consumption.

Heating Tips

Take advantage of free solar heat (ie. the sun) – keep blinds open in the day to let in sun, close them at night to hold in the heat

Check your heaters filter, does it need replacing? If so, replace it. This should be a once a month type of project

Set thermostat at 68 degrees, 2-3 degrees lower if you’ll be away from the house for several hours

Do you have a fireplace? If so, close the flue when not in use

Use warm clothes, blankets, etc. to feel warmer. This will allow you to lower your thermostat temp. Don’t be afraid to snuggle with a loved one, or even a pet!
Caulk and weatherstrip around doors and windows. It’s inexpensive, and it can significantly reduce drafts and improve comfort. Drafts are the number source of enery/heat leakage in the home.

Turn off exhaust fans immediately after use. Exaust fans are actually blowing your heated air outside

Use ceiling fans (”backwards”) to circulate warm air down from the ceiling. You will be amazed at what a difference this makes. Remember, warm air rises.
Cooking helps heat your home – but don’t use the oven as a primary heat source.

Using the oven to heat your home can be extremely dangerous
Have your heat pump or furnace serviced at least once annually. Ensure that it is running efficiently.

Cooling Tips

Control solar heat – keep windows shaded to keep out direct sun. Dark wooden blinds seem to work the best.

Replace filter in air conditioning unit at least once a month. If you can’t replace, at least remove it and clean it in the sink or shower.

Set thermostat at 79 degrees, 2-3 degrees higher if you’ll be away from the house for several hours
Use ceiling fans to make your home feel cooler. You want to keep the fans on “forward” to ensure the warm air is sucked up. Basically, do the opposite of trying to warm your house:)

Turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances – they add heat to your home and cost you money
Do cooking and other heat producing chores during cooler parts of the day (morning or evening). If you have an outdoor grill, fire it up. Not only is grilling a great way to reduce the heat inside your home, it’s healthy!

Turn off exhaust fans after use. Again, you are blowing your cooler air outside. Remember when your folks used to say, “Hey, we’re not heating the outside”? Well, we’re not trying to cool the outside either
Ask the landlord to service the AC at least once a year.

This should not be a problem, especially if the landlord would like the unit to last more than a couple of years. If the unit seems as though it’s not cooling your home efficiently, ask the landlord to replace.

Water Heating and Lowering Water Consumption Tips

Use low flow fixtures/faucet aerators
Don’t let hot water run when shaving, brushing teeth, doing dishes, etc.
If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down
Do only full loads of wash
Use cold or warm water wash instead of hot to save

Lights/Appliances

Turn off when not in use(Duh!)

Use compact fluorescent lamps instead of traditional light bulbs. There are a slew of energy saving light bulbs on the market. They tend to cost more up front, but end up saving you money in the long run

How To Feel Safe And Secure In Your Apartment

When most people are looking at an apartment they are looking at the amenities offered with the apartment including how many bedrooms, appliances, utilities, a pool, laundry room, and tennis courts.

Most people tend to forget to ask questions about safety and security when they are looking for a apartment. It is important to ask a property manager about the safety of the building, neighborhood and apartment itself.

Don’t forget, you are also responsible for your own safety and what actions you take when living in an apartment. To make sure you feel secure in your place we provided some safety tips to consider when living in and apartment complex.

Questions to ask before you rent
  • Ask your landlord about the lock on your door, deadbolt locks are the best for apartment doors. If you don’t have one for your apartment you can always ask the manager.

  • Ask about the buildings security; is it in a gated community? is there a doorman at the entrance at all times? are there cameras? can tenants only get into the building? how do guest enter the building? Are there intercoms for each apartment? Is the entrance locked at all times?

  • Ask about the neighborhood, you don’t want to live in an high crime neighborhood. You can talk to the landlord or neighbors about the neighborhood you live in. Ask if people wander around the building, is it on a busy road or a secluded road, have there been any crimes in the building before.

  • Ask about parking, you want to have parking spot close to the building or close to your door.

  • Do your own research on the area or apartment buildings. Read resident comments or search online about the apartment or neighborhood.

Dangerous Areas in Apartment Buildings
  • Parking lots and Garages are a high risk for someone surprising you from behind. There are hidden areas where people can lurk around and be unnoticed. Make sure to always keep you’re guard up; check your surroundings, try not to walk at night alone, find a parking spot close to your apartment, stay close to lighted areas, always check inside your car before entering.

  • Mailboxes are also important, someone can go into your mailbox and look at your personal information. Make sure to look around the area when picking up your mail, have a lock on your mail box and don’t write your full name on the box (use initials or last name).

  • Laundry rooms can also be dangerous because they are usually in secluded areas of the apartment buildings and can be very loud and hard to hear with the machines are on. Some laundry rooms offer keys for tenants to use to get in but if that’s not the case be careful who you talk to in the building and try to go when you know it’s a busy time, when most people are home.

  • The neighborhood and outside the building are also dangerous spots. You don’t know if someone is following you home, as i said before try not to walk by yourself at night and try to carry mase with you at all times. Make sure to be cautious around you; when you enter your building make sure there’s no one behind you who can try to sneak into the building.
The dos and don’ts for safe apartment living
Do…
  • Create impression you are not living alone; write initials on your mailbox, in sentences use the word we instead of I.
  • Befriend neighbors who can help you in an emergency.
  • Don’t let anyone in the building that you don’t know
  • Lock you’re doors and windows at all times especially if you are leaving the apartment for any circumstance and when you go to bed.
  • Check to see if last tenant gave back their keys to the building.
  • Make sure you’re door has a peephole, you can request one from your landlord.
  • Keep lights on a timer so people will think you are in your house.
  • Always keep your cell phone close by when you are outside or inside your building.
  • Keep a bat in the house either by the door or by your bed.
  • Keep an inventory of your personal belongings so you can report in something is missing.
  • If you see someone who looks suspicious in the building call the police and your landlord.
  • Make sure you have a lock and intercom in your building to identify who is trying to come inside
  • Always be alert!
Don’t…
  • Make Duplicates of your apartment key or put the spare in a visible place.
  • Give out personal information about yourself, where you live, what you do for work, what your plans are for the day.
  • Leave valuables in your car or close to your window where people can see them.
  • Leave notes on the door for roommates, neighbors or landlords saying that you are gone or what time you will be back.
